Description: Size: 108 x 153 mm The south-east corner of the Darling Gardens in Clifton Hill showing elaborate flower gardens and smooth lawn. Plants include pampas grass, canna lilies, dianthus, daisies and a low edging plant. A tall barbed-wire fence separates this section from the rest of the Darling Gardens which are not formally cultivated; a picket fence runs around the whole. The gardener poses with a terracotta flower pot in one hand and a trowel in the other. Behind him can be seen his beautiful shed with decorative weatherboards, curved iron roof and iron finials and ridging. In the distance is the shot tower. Behind the shed, in South Terrace, are the facades of numbers 14 and 13 (still standing in 1992, but their urns are missing), number 12 (still standing), numbers 11 and 10 (a two-storeyed pair demolished in the early 1970s), number 9 (demolished), numbers 8 and 7 (still standing but with slate roofs replaced by tiles), and number 6, whose veranda and part of the parapet had been removed and the brickwork painted over, perhaps in the 1950s. The veranda was replaced by the present owners in the early 1980s but the urns and curved pediment are missing. To the far right can just be seen two-storeyed number 2, which is still standing.
