Description: About 25 men take a break from their important business to look towards the photographer. Although this photo is not documented it would seem to be a council meeting, probably in the 1890s. The men would therefore include 15 councillors, the town clerk and other senior council employees, and perhaps some observers. Some sit around a table on leather-covered buttoned stools, the table strewn with ledgers, glass ink wells and various papers. Other men sit a little further from the table on high-backed settles upholstered to match the stools. Against the far wall is a very high-backed chair on a dais and the man seated there is presumably the mayor. On the wall hang three portraits of former mayors.
