Description: Size: 79 x 52 mm Richard Walker walking along Rupert Street on his way to do some shopping, wicker basket over one arm and walking stick in the other. A mariner who sailed around the world seven times, he had a fall from a mast at the age of 16 and broke his leg, leaving him with a lifelong limp which is detectable in this photo. In 1924 the leg became gangrenous and he died at the age of 91. Mr Walker was a well-known and popular local identity, having lived in the same house for many years and often helping young mothers by doing some shopping for them. His ninetieth birthday was celebrated at the Vere Street school where the headmaster presented him with a wicker chair.
